What is a periodontist?

What is a periodontist and what do they do?

Periodontists are dentists that have been specially trained in the diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of gum disease as well as the planning, placement, and maintenance of dental implants. They also focus on the reconstructive therapy of bone and gum tissue that has been lost due to trauma or disease to restore the mouth to optimum health. Following dental school, periodontists attend an additional three years of school perfecting periodontal procedures and techniques, ensuring you receive the highest quality of care. Often times patient’s periodontal needs can be effectively treated at their general dentist’s office. For patient’s who either do not respond to initial therapy or have more complex issues, a partnership between their general dentist and a periodontist, such as Dr. Schmalz, can provide patients with the best outcome.
