Periodontal Non-Surgical Therapy
Initial Periodontal Therapy
Initial periodontal therapy, sometimes called scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical periodontal treatment that is an effective way to treat periodontal disease that has not become severe. The process involves cleaning between the gum and tooth down to the tooth root surface, and removing the bacteria that has built up on the root surface that is ultimately causing the disease. When scaling and root planing is successful, there is a reduction in the inflammation in the gingival tissue and the pockets created by periodontal disease will be reduced greatly. The gum tissue will reform more closely to the tooth surface and intimately become healthier.
