Why you should see a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology
A diplomate is a board certified periodontist who has made substantial accomplishments beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty and is certified by the American Board of Periodontology. In order to be certified one must:
- Complete an undergraduate college education and continue on to dental school to earn the D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree
- Be a certified periodontist after successful completion of an educational program in Periodontology following dental school. The educational program must be recognized by Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
- Pass a comprehensive qualifying and oral examination covering all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants.
- Maintain their diplomate status by recertification every six years.
